  23. II. ***WHAT*** IS THE CHURCH OF ALL WORLDS???

  25.      A. OVERVIEW

  27.         The Church of All Worlds ISN'T a bunch of folks who read
  28.  Robert Heinlein's book _Stranger_in_a_Strange_Land_ and wanted
  29.  to play act. It wasn't started by Heinlein, nor did he belong to
  30.  or benefit from it, except perhaps in the form of new fans.  The
  31.  Church does draw some of its form and philosophy from SISL and
  32.  tends to attract future oriented people who enjoy reading
  33.  speculative fiction, never-the-less, it definitely ISN'T a
  34.  trekky type grok-flock (but some of us have tendencies towards
  35.  being trekkies).

  39.         The Church of All Worlds is Neo-Pagan, implying an
  40.  eclectic reconstruction of ancient Nature religions, and
  41.  combining archetypes of many cultures with other mystic,
  42.  environmental and spiritual disciplines..  Indeed, we were the
  43.  ones who first proposed, in 1967, that the term "Pagan" be
  44.  adopted to apply to the newly-emerging movement of Nature-based
  45.  and revivalist pre-Christian religions, including Witchcraft as
  46.  European shamanism, but also including Egyptian, Greek, Norse,
  47.  Druidic, Hindu, and various indigenous tribal traditions, such
  48.  as Polynesian, Native American, African, etc.

  50.         But we in CAW are not trying merely to recreate a
  51.  Paradise Lost; we are actively involved in helping to save the
  52.  present world as well as working to actualize a visionary
  53.  future.  With roots deep in the Earth and branches reaching
  54.  towards the stars, we evoke and create myths not only of a
  55.  Golden Age long past, but of one yet to come.

  57.         CAW presently has about three dozen regional "Nests",
  58.  which is what we call our local congregations, or Circles.
  59.  These are indeed member groups, as are the several subsidiary
  60.  "branch" organizations that we have created and chartered to
  61.  focus on particular areas of concern.  These branches include:
  62.  Nemeton --- fundraising, marketing and publishing; Forever
  63.  Forests --- treeplanting and environmental action; Ecosophical
  64.  Research Association (ERA) --- research and exploration into
  65.  origins and actualizations of myths and legends; Lifeways ---
  66.  education and personal development; Peaceful Order of the Earth
  67.  Mother (POEM) --- dedicated to children and child nurturing;
  68.  Holy Order of Mother Earth (HOME) --- developing magical and
  69.  ritual structures and techniques.

  71.         CAW is worldwide, including seven Nests in Australia,
  72.  where we are the first legally-recognized Pagan religion (as we
  73.  were the first in the US).  A third of our Nests are in
  74.  California, reflecting the greatest concentration of our
  75.  members.  We have individual members in many other countries
  76.  throughout the world.

  78.         We have created a new Tribalism, where we relate to each
  79.  other as members of a tribe, with interconnecting clans and
  80.  families.  And in turn, our tribe is one of the Nations of Earth
  81.  Religions, bound together by our common love and reverence for
  82.  our Mother, the Living Earth.
